Overview

The main objective of the three-year degree course in “Fisica” is to provide a cultural and methodological preparation suitable for both the continuation of studies and immediate entry into the world of work.
In fact, the course offers, through a large and solid set of basic and characterizing knowledge, the acquisition by the student of the necessary skills in the field of physics and the disciplines that it presupposes, leading students to achieve a good familiarity with the scientific method, both as regards the treatment and interpretation of data, both as regards the elaboration of models and theoretical descriptions of physical reality or of other realities that can be represented by the same methods.
The degree program is a methodological one and includes a single curriculum.
The aforementioned allow the graduate to enter the world of work after completing their studies. Physics graduates are very flexible and adaptable to the needs of several fields of activity and this is particularly true for graduates who have had a solid background.
The skills achieved allow inclusion in many work activities.
In particular, possible employment and professional opportunities can be identified at:
- Physical research centers and laboratories existing in public bodies or companies
- Astronomical observatories
- Laboratories using nuclear research reactors
- Centers and laboratories that require skills in data acquisition and processing
- Health facilities that require imaging and diagnostic knowledge radiation protection
- Research centers for banks and insurance companies
- Structures where skills in modeling phenomena in various fields are required
The degree course is also suitable for the continuation of studies in master’s degree courses, in particular those belonging to the classes that are the natural continuation (Physics and Sciences of the Universe), but also master’s degree courses belonging to classes contiguous to physics (Mathematics, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Mathematical-Physical Modeling for Engineering). In addition, the skills of electronics and computer science acquired during the degree course allow the continuation of studies in master’s degree courses dedicated to the deepening of these disciplines. Finally, with reference to studies born in recent times and designated as econophysics, must be included master’s degree courses in economics and finance.

The teaching methods are mainly the conventional ( lecture and exercises both in the classroom and in laboratory). The latter type constitutes an important completion to the overall body of theoretical treatment and provides the skills necessary for inclusion in many sectors of work activity.
To the conventional didactic forms are added the well-established supports provided by tutoring projects, divided into guided study activities for both groups and individual students.
The achievement of the training objectives described above is achieved through the classical form of evaluation at the conclusion of each previous teaching possibly from ongoing tests.
The final test constitutes an assessment of the ability to synthesize and the degree of autonomy of study to tackle new issues.

Career opportunities

Graduates will carry out professional activities in technological applications of physics at an industrial level (e.g. electronics, optics, information technology, mechanics, acoustics, etc.), laboratory activities and related services, in particular: radioprotection, environmental control and safety, development and characterization of materials, telecommunications, remote controls of satellite systems, and participation in activities of public and private research bodies, in all areas, including non-scientific ones (e.g. economics, finance, security), in which skills are required to analyze and model even more complex phenomena with scientific methodology.
The skills achieved allow inclusion in many work activities, in particular:
- Physical research centers and laboratories existing in public bodies or companies;
- Astronomical observatories;
- Laboratories using nuclear research reactors;
- Centers and laboratories requiring expertise in data acquisition and processing;
- Health facilities demanding knowledge of diagnostic imaging and radiation protection;
- Research centers for banks and insurance companies;
- Structures where skills in modeling phenomena in various fields are required.
In addition, the Degree program provides the necessary preparation in order to access to several Master’s Degree programs, such as those indicated in the course description, as well as the access to various first level Master courses.
