Overview
The Bilingual Master’s Degree in “Scienze Geologiche Applicate” is aimed at training graduates with a cultural profile that unites adequate bases of scientific culture and specific knowledge in the main fields of application of Earth Sciences.
The courses are delivered in Italian and English, in an educational system designed to offer maximum flexibility and to adapt to the scientific interests of our students.
The possession of the requisites and the adequacy of the preparation are verified through an interview of the student with a commission designated by the Didactic Council.
For registration, the following conditions must be met:
a) Hold the degree obtained in Geological Sciences and in Earth Sciences, or in another class whose training includes no less than 72 university educational credits in the scientific-disciplinary sectors of the geological sciences area, or another qualification obtained abroad that is recognized as suitable by the teaching council;
b) Knowledge of English, which can be demonstrated through the presentation of suitable certifications (B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages established by the Council of Europe). In the absence of a certification, the knowledge of the language is verified through the preliminary interview.
Graduates in the MSc program in Applied Geological Sciences will be able to carry out activities in the fields of:
- Geological investigations and geognostic prospecting applied to the design and execution of engineering works;
- Geological survey of the subsoil for the research and use of hydrocarbon deposits and geothermal energy;
- Geological survey of the subsoil for the research, use and protection of groundwater resources;
- Basic and thematic geological mapping, including computer cartography and territorial information systems;
- Environmental impact assessment and recovery of abandoned mining sites;
- Research and characterization of geomaterials of commercial interest;
- Surveys for the assessment and prevention of degradation of cultural and environmental heritage and for its conservation and enhancement;
- Scientific research
These professionals will find application in companies and professional studios engaged in environmental, engineering and research of georesources, in local bodies (Municipalities, Provinces, Regions, Mountain Communities), at national (Ministries) or international levels (UNESCO, FAO etc. ), in addition to public and private research institutes (University, CNR, INGV, Civil Protection, etc.).
The duration of the course is two years. The training activities of the Master’s Degree Program correspond to a total of 120 ECTS credits.
For the characteristic training activities, students must achieve in the two years:
- 18 CFUs in the disciplines of geological-paleontology;
- 24 CFUs in the disciplines of geomorphological and geological applications;
- 18 CFUs in the disciplines of mineralogical-petrographic-geochemical field.
Overall, the examinations of the characterizing activities are no more than eight.
The curriculum also provides that the student acquire at least:
- 18 CFUs in related and supplementary training activities, corresponding to three courses of 6 CFUs;
- 12 CFUs of free choice educational activities, inserting in the study plan one or more courses active from the entire University offer, including those of geological scope.
The final exam and the internships are respectively assigned a weight of 23 and 6 CFUs. The internship is an integral part of the training program and contributes to the achievement of the objectives of the Master’s Degree program, and it is carried out in institutions / companies with which the University of Pavia has an agreement.
In addition, 1 CFU for Transversal Competences will be awarded to students who have attended supplementary teaching activities.
The lectures of the Master’s Degree course are enriched by laboratory exercises and numerous field trips: this way the geologist acquires solid practical skills and learns to apply what he has learned in the classroom. The University recognizes the importance of the ground activities for our students, supporting the didactic activity of courses with adequate financial resources.
Students can take part of their studies at Universities abroad with student mobility programs recognized by the Universities of the European Union (ERASMUS Studio, ERASMUS +, ERASMUS Traineeship). The student can spend periods abroad even in locations not belonging to student mobility programs, for the preparation of the thesis, provided that previously approved by the thesis supervisor with a written statement to be sent to the Student Office to regularize the insurance position of the student.
Graduates in Applied Geological Sciences can compete for doctoral positions available at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
The central theme of the PhD in Earth and Environmental Sciences is the study of the Earth system, in its various abiotic and biotic components.
The PhD program is aimed at the acquisition of highly qualified scientific skills in all disciplines of the Earth and Nature Sciences.
Through a vast network of international collaborations, with universities, research centers and companies, doctoral students can develop their own research, both basic and applied.
