Overview

The Master’s Degree Program in “Scienze della Natura” is activated at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences of the University of Pavia.
The standard duration of the course is two years.
The student who intends to give himself an advanced naturalistic education finds in Pavia the possibility to study and carry out research in a welcoming and long tradition environment.
The teaching organization, governed by specific Regulations, by the Statute of the University of Pavia, by the University Educational Regulations, by the Student Regulations, is coordinated by the Didactic Council for Science and Technology for Nature.
The lessons are organized in frontal classes and workshops and exercises. Of the 120 credits to be obtained to obtain the Master’s Degree, 12 CFUs are dedicated to the dissertation internship and 18 CFUs to the final exam, while the remaining 81 CFUs are represented by basic, characterizing, similar and supplementary courses, while 9 CFUs are dedicated to free choice courses. Of the latter, for the academic year 2018/19, 13 courses are proposed from the course of study itself.
There are many courses providing practical laboratory activities and different are the interdisciplinary excursions in natural environments provided to support teaching.
The Master’s Degree in Nature Sciences offers a cultural education oriented to a systemic vision of the natural environment, described and interpreted through a good practice of the scientific method, applied to the analysis of components and factors that underlie processes, systems and problems.
The course prepares to perform detection, classification and interpretation of abiotic and biotic components present in natural ecosystems; it provides the scientific basis for drawing up impact assessments and formulating management proposals for the purposes of conservation and / or improvement of the systems. On these occasions, naturalistic censuses and data evaluations are carried out directly by the students under the supervision of the tutors. The master’s degree program adheres to community student mobility programs.
The course prepares to the profession of teachers, paleontologists, botanists, zoologists, ecologists, museum curators and conservators, researchers and technicians graduated in natural and biological sciences, with skills also in earth sciences.
Since 2016, a special agreement between the University of Pavia and the Professional Association of Agrotechnics and Agrotechnics graduates has been in force, thanks to which the credits accrued during the years (3 + 2) of the three-year and master’s degree program, including curricular internships, if they are consistent with the contents, they are recognized for the purpose of taking the State exam for enrollment in the Register. This possibility facilitates our graduates to carry out their profession.
The master’s degree program is particularly designed for inclusion in the labor market, but also for the continuation of studies in Second Level Master’s or Research Doctorates, such as the one organized by the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
