Overview
This course is aimed at training students for the profession of Cultural Heritage Restorer, and completion will qualift them for this career. The course venue is located in the city of Cremona.
The course includes scientific and technical-practical activities, including historical study and framing, material constitution, and diagnosis of the state of conservation, aimed at the preparation and execution of a correct restoration project and/or control and prevention of degradation processes.
To pursue the planned objectives and allow the student to tackle problems related to conservation and restoration from the beginning of the course, practical laboratory activities are distributed over the five years.
In order to train the restorer, therefore, knowledge and skills are required in different areas and for each training path there are (in terms of CFUs (total: 300)):
176 CFUs – lectures and exercises at the University of Pavia, Milan Polytechnic, and the Cremona offices, carried out in the following fields:
- Restoration (history and theories of restoration)
- Humanities (museology, librarianship, history of art, musicology and history of music, ethnomusicology, paleography)
- Sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, design, computer science)
- Law and economics (legislation of cultural heritage and business economics)
100 CFUs: in restoration laboratories
24 CFUs: final exam (12CFUs of internship)
In terms of HOURS (total 4246 hours):
1146: lectures and exercises at the University of Pavia, Milan Polytechnic, and the Cremona offices, carried out in the following areas:
- Restoration (history and theories of restoration)
- Humanities (museology, librarianship, history of art, musicology and history of music, ethnomusicology, paleography)
- Sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, design, computer science)
- Law and economics(legislation of cultural heritage and business economics)
2500 hours: in restoration laboratories
600 hours: for the final exam (which includes the preparation of a thesis, which, as a rule, is experimental and involves a 300-hour training activity on a topic related to the conservation and restoration of cultural heritage)

Career opportunities
Graduates in Conservazione e restauro dei beni culturali may find positions related to their skills in laboratories and renovation companies, collaborate with institutions of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities responsible for the protection of Cultural Heritage (superintendence, musea, archives, libraries, etc.), with companies and professional organizations in the sector, with public and private institutions as well as research organizations operating in the field of conservation, not to mention renovation and enhancement of cultural heritage.
In particular, graduates who have followed PFP6 will find employment as conservators and restorers of musical instruments, tools, scientific and technical instruments at musea and institutions both in Italy and abroad.
