Overview

The Master’s degree program in Metodi e Tecnologie per la storia dell’arte ( LM – 89; Art History) offers an updated and innovative academic path that aims to bridge specialized knowledge in art history with the opportunities provided by new technologies in the study of cultural heritage.
The program aims to provide in-depth knowledge of Italian and European artistic heritage, covering the period from the Early Middle Ages to the contemporary era. In particular, it seeks to promote mastery of the specific methodologies used in art historical studies, as well as of the various disciplines relevant to the interpretation of figurative phenomena: from the history of restoration to the history of artistic techniques; from museography to archival research and the use of manuscript and printed sources.
A key component of the program is dedicated to the use of digital resources related to cultural heritage (digital humanities), as well as to scientific and diagnostic technologies for the analysis of artworks. In this latter field, the program benefits from a close collaboration with the Arvedi Laboratory of Non-Invasive Diagnostics, based in Cremona and affiliated with the Department of Musicology and Cultural Heritage.
The goal is to foster a meaningful contamination between art history, direct engagement with artworks, and the methods of the pure sciences.
To broaden its educational reach, part of the program will be delivered in blended mode, combining in-person lectures with specifically designed online and asynchronous learning modules.

Career opportunities

At the end of the two-year program, graduates will be qualified for high-level professional roles such as curators and conservators in museums and exhibition centers. They will also be able to engage in project development and collaboration with public and private institutions, publishing houses, specialized journals and websites, tourism promotion agencies, auction houses, and art galleries.
Graduates may also access teacher training pathways specifically for teaching Art History (class A-54), and, by including the appropriate exams in their study plan, for other teaching qualification areas in the humanities. To facilitate entry in the workforce world, the program foresees the issuance of yearly scholarships, dedicated to the most worthy students, that may carry out a paid internship in institutions and enterprises active in the field of cultural heritage, according to the LM+ model of the University of Pavia.
